Charlie “Chooch” Hammel
Grew up in St. Paul and played high school at STA. Still believed to hold the record for most warm- up shutouts and 3rd assists by a Minnesota goaltender in state history. Upon retiring attended Creighton University. Has coached hockey for the last 10 years at St. Thomas Academy and from 2012-2017 served as the St. Paul Academy Varsity goalie coach. What drives me to coach at MAP is the athletes. The energy that comes from this environment of driving and challenging athletes to break through barriers they thought they couldn’t is infectious, it makes the players and coaches better people in the process and I truly enjoy being a part of that.
I’ve played 3 years of High School hockey at Farmington and I am currently playing in the NAHL for the Kenai River Brown Bears.
I have been a goalie coach for 3 years and work at hockey camps and my association to train goalies.
During my 2015-16 High School season, my team made it to the state tournament. I was named honorable mention for all-conference in my 2015-2016 season and won team MVP and all-conference in the 2016-2017 season.
I love to work with goalies to help them get better and learn about the game of hockey. Through my experiences, I can relate to them closely and help them achieve success.

What drives me to work at MAP:
I wanted to be at MAP where everybody shares that same passion for hockey. I want to help young goalies improve their game. I love being at the rink, training, and learning the game. I want to bring the same hard-working attitude to MAP that I’ve had throughout my hockey career. I look forward to a great summer!
I have played three years of varsity hockey at South Saint Paul High School. During the high school season, I helped my goalie coach at goalie clinics every Monday night. The reason I want to work at MAP is that I would like to help other goalies strive to do their best and have fun doing it.

What Pushes me: I am really pushed by the fact that the coaches at map have given and are giving so much knowledge to me that I want to pass it on to the younger kids. Also by studying the game and giving it advice it not only makes the kids better but makes me better.
Currently playing in the WHL (Western Hockey League) played 2 years of varsity High School hockey for Lakeville South.
Goalie coached/coach for 3 years now with spring and winter team.
Set school records for most shutouts in a season and was on Minnesota all-state hockey team.
I want to work at MAP because I love helping and teaching kids/players on how to get better.
